Beauty is only skin deep. Right?! Right?!

My soon-to-be 5 year old, Little A, has picked up on a very annoying habit from my soon-to-be 13 year old, Tween C.  One of her favorite sayings is “I know, right?!”  Little A has only picked up the last word, though.  Everything she says is now followed by, “Right?!”  It doesn’t matter what it is.  And you’d better respond with “Right!” immediately, or she just repeats it over and over and it gets louder and louder until you finally confirm that she is, in fact, right.

A: “Mom, I put my glasses on the sink when I took a bath and now I just put them back on, right?!”

Z: [Washing dishes.  Not paying attention.  Nothing went into my ears, and therefore, nothing came out of my mouth. ]

A: “Right?!”

Z:  [Yeah.  I’m still not paying paying attention.]

A: “MOM!  Right?!”

Z:  [La la la.]

A: “MOM!  RIGHT?!”

Z:  “Oh, yeah, right, A!”  I have no idea what she just said.

This habit became so ingrained in her psyche that one morning when I woke her up, singing my “Get up, La La!…It’s time to get ready for school…” song, she moaned and groaned in her normal ‘I do not want to get up’ fashion, and finally turned over, looked at me dead in the face and said her very first word of the day, and it was, “Right?!”  I just stared at her for a minute…making sure that I did hear what I thought I did, and then I said, “You crazy thing, you didn’t even say anything before you said ‘right’ that time!”  She giggled hysterically because she realized that at the same time that I did.

Also, Little A is constantly in awe of how beautiful and/or handsome some people are.  She tells Tween C’s friends that she loves them because they are pretty.  Yesterday I cut Big E’s hair, and she told him that he was very handsome.  So handsome, in fact, she said that when she grew up, she would marry him.  He told her to stop being creepy and go away.  She said, “Okay!”  and skipped off in true La La fashion.

When she says that she loves someone or likes someone because they are beautiful, I always agree with her that the person is pretty or handsome, and then I tell her that she shouldn’t base her feelings about someone on how they look.  I think it’s important for little kids to know this, since in the cartoons all the bad guys look like monsters and all the heros are beautiful and charismatic.  I stress this all the time with her, because it’s most important for a girl to get this, wouldn’t you think?  It’s my job as a mother of girls to make sure that they know that an attractive person isn’t necessarily a “good guy”.  And someone who’s less attractive but has a great heart is worthy of their love.

I told you all of THAT to tell you THIS:  The last time I pointed out to Little A that she  shouldn’t dole out her love based on people’s appearances, she said, “Oh, mom!  I love YOU, even if you ARE fat!  Right?!”  I was forced to respond.  “Right,”  I said, as I watched Zohrhubby and Big E double over in laughter.

At least she is getting it.  Right?!

HAHAHAHA! I, too, am guilty of the “I know, right?” thing. However, I will now truncate it to “Right?” in honor of Little A. As for liking beautiful people just because they’re beautiful, I’d like to think I’m a little past that, and I can only hope others like me even though I’m “fat.”

I’m an utterly superficial ass, yet I’m disappointed when others make snap judgments about me strictly from my appearance. I am unfailingly inconsistent.

  3. Wow. So, maybe I was wrong. Maybe I don’t want Gabe to start talking.

Not too long ago, Tween C, slipped that she thought I was pretty when we all first met, before I put on all that weight. Thanks, Tween C.

That made me laugh so hard. Out LOUD. !!! LOL !!!!

I love how you are teaching your children valuable lessons. Real lessons.
And even though YOU ARE NOT FAT, I think it’s important that you explain to Little A that even fat people need love! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!

this is exactly what I was going to say too. And you are definitely not fat, which is another thing you should work on with your girls……….the fashion world glorifies skinny to an unhealthy degree. You may be larger than you were in HS, but you are not fat. Fat is that Megan bridesmaid, not you.

ok Zorhbak i caught up 🙂

  11. While you’re at it, you might as well explain that Beauty and the Beast is just a fairy story, and in real life mean guys don’t turn into charming princes if you just love them enough.
Good luck with that one too!
